Delicious homemade apple pie
I’ve always loved homemade apple pie. It’s such a simple dish but always elicits feelings of home, warmth and love for me. For me it’s synonymous with family gatherings and holidays. Once I was old enough to participate in preparing meals, I was always on dessert duty because of my intense love of baking. This recipe makes a sauce that is sweet enough without being too sugary, and is a great complement to the tartness of the granny smith apple
Homemade Apple Pie
A delicious, tartly sweet apple pie made from scratch, with a crumbly homemade crust!
- 2 pie crusts
- 6-8 cups granny smith apples, (thinly sliced)
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup applesauce, (unsweetened)
- 1/2 cup pure cane sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour, (unbleached)
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
-
In a small saucepan mix applesauce, butter and flour until a paste forms.
-
Add in water, cane sugar, and brown sugar.
-
Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat and let simmer for a few minutes.
-
Add sliced apples to pan with bottom crust, and when sauce is ready, pour most of the mixture over the apples, leaving just a little in the saucepan. I like to leave a little to brush the top of the crust with.
-
Cover with second pie crust, or you can even do a lattice pie crust, if you’re feeling fancy, and gently brush, or drizzle, remainder of sauce over top crust.
-
Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, or until apples are soft and crust begins to brown.
