Delicious homemade apple pie

I’ve always loved homemade apple pie. It’s such a simple dish but always elicits feelings of home, warmth and love for me. For me it’s synonymous with family gatherings and holidays. Once I was old enough to participate in preparing meals, I was always on dessert duty because of my intense love of baking. This recipe makes a sauce that is sweet enough without being too sugary, and is a great complement to the tartness of the granny smith apple

Homemade Apple Pie

A delicious, tartly sweet apple pie made from scratch, with a crumbly homemade crust!

  • 2 pie crusts
  • 6-8 cups granny smith apples, (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup applesauce, (unsweetened)
  • 1/2 cup pure cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour, (unbleached)
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

  2. In a small saucepan mix applesauce, butter and flour until a paste forms.

  3. Add in water, cane sugar, and brown sugar.

  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat and let simmer for a few minutes.

  5. Add sliced apples to pan with bottom crust, and when sauce is ready, pour most of the mixture over the apples, leaving just a little in the saucepan. I like to leave a little to brush the top of the crust with.

  6. Cover with second pie crust, or you can even do a lattice pie crust, if you’re feeling fancy, and gently brush, or drizzle, remainder of sauce over top crust.

  7. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, or until apples are soft and crust begins to brown.
